Phonics Information

At Springside, we deliver high-quality phonics teaching through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme, beginning in Nursery and continuing throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1. This structured and systematic approach ensures that all children build strong foundations in early language, reading, and phonics from the very start of their learning journey.

We are passionate about developing a lifelong love of reading. Alongside our phonics teaching, children have regular opportunities to read, share stories, and explore a wide range of high-quality texts. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking the wider curriculum and are dedicated to ensuring every child becomes a confident and enthusiastic reader.

We are committed to supporting every child to succeed. Through our Keep Up sessions, children who need additional practice receive timely, targeted support so they can keep pace with their peers. These sessions are carefully planned and delivered to reinforce learning, build confidence, and secure progress.

We regularly assess children’s progress through ongoing checks and half-termly assessments. This allows us to quickly identify any gaps in learning and provide appropriate support, ensuring that all pupils stay on track with the programme.

High-quality teaching is underpinned by regular CPD for staff. Ongoing training, coaching and monitoring ensure that phonics is taught consistently and effectively across the school, maintaining high expectations and strong outcomes for all pupils.

We also recognise that some children require a more personalised approach. For pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), we provide tailored phonics support, adapting teaching strategies and resources to meet individual needs. Our aim is to ensure that every child can access the curriculum and develop a love of reading.

We are incredibly proud of our outcomes, with 85% of our pupils meeting the expected standard in the phonics screening check last year. This reflects the dedication of our staff, the effectiveness of our teaching, and the positive attitudes of our learners.
